Saxo Capital Markets Event: Is it the end of the Euro as we know it? 13Sept13

I can't say that I have ever taken much notice of an outfit called Saxo Capital Markets before I received an invitation to their event at Bloomberg HQ a few weeks ago. From a marketing perspective this email was intriguing for several reasons:

First the topic was a straightforward question. Is this the end of the Euro as we know it? Right to the point. 'Saxo' sounds European. Surely an institution with Eurozone baggage couldn't bring this degree of clarity about the Euro political project that is, and has, consumed the attention of the EU political and business classes for the past six years.  More investigation revealed that Saxo appear to be Danish in origin which explains a lot ...Read more HERE...

Interesting approach to this event. From looking at your previous Tweets and website it seems you get to go to quite a few events like this during the year. I know that you like to link the macro and micro, the academic and the real so how about this: I just spent a couple of weeks on vacation in Europe and saw very little sign that people were taking shorter holidays, although STAYcations seem to be the order of the day. i.e. people weren't travelling abroad as much to save money.

Good point on the STAYcation front Peter. We planned to go to Asia this summer but with the weather being so good have been to places in the UK that I haven't been to in many years. (see this: http://is.gd/2ymSIh ) I reckon the improved UK PMI numbers this morning are partly due to UK STAYcastioners (and of course, the weather!). Be interesting to see August GDP figures when they come out. Thanks for commenting....

Obviously many other questions to be asked and answered on this topic before even a general occlusion can be reached. I also have slightly more than a suspicion that the " Euro " depends more on the political will of the "bankers" to sustain it than the absolute financial sensibility.

What is it about the English and holidays in August? Even worse why assume everyone else follows suit?

Thanks for this Bill. Yep it's all about the politics. The English and Holidays are a sympton of our obsession wiht the weather!
