Spanish Summer Balls

Listen for Balls. What a week for Spain.  If ever a country needs to understand the TOB it's the Kingdom of Spain.  This week respected commentators have suggested that some sort of military coup may be on the cards to prevent the break up of the country if the current austerity package being implemented by the Government causes the Kingdom to fracture (here). In addition, the Spanish have been well and truly stitched up by the Eurozone's Triple AAA countries: The Netherlands, Germany and (the hardest beggars of them all) Finland.

In terms of the country's territorial integrity all eyes are now focused on the Catalonia elections on 25 November. Although how a region which has beggars like the one above thinks it can do better out of Madrid's orbit beats me.  (I took this photo in Barcelona a few years ago).

An even more serious question is how can the Spanish trust any agreements they make with the AAA countries?  Back in June they were told that the holes in the  financial accounts of Spanish banks need not appear on the Country's balance sheet. I couldn't believe that this had been agreed at the time, particularly by the Germans who through various help-funds set up in the Euro-area would have been the people likely left with the tab.

It has become clear to anyone who follows the shenanigans of the Eurozone closely that the Euro clique will do absolutely anything to ensure that they get a balmy summer holiday in August.  Last summer it was all about 'Merkozy' (the great Franco-German axis personified) saving the Euro and their whole plan fell apart even before the end of August 2011. This year is even worse.  The triple A countries have blatantly gone back on what they allowed to be stated as their positions last June with respect to Spain and others. Perhaps they had a rethink while lying on the beach or, more likely, just knew that they weren't going to do what they agreed from the start.  In any case, the markets have noted this and will cause great problems for the leading countries of the Eurozone the next time they come up with a supposedly 'generous' solution for the indebted countries.

I have marked this blog post for particular attention next June and July when I suspect that the same Euro-decision makers will try once again to set themselves for a quiet August with more 'suspect' plans.  Of course, this assumes the Eurozone is still intact by then!

Can Blackberry sink the shot or will it slide off the RIM

Eye on the Ball. A fall from grace can be as quick as it can be unforeseen.  Anyone who likes to peck away at a 'real keypad' as opposed to a virtual one will be watching with interest to see what the next steps are for the world's best messaging system (http://reut.rs/PDjnta).

We can't imagine many of the leaders at Research in Motion Limited, maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, were all that bothered when the iPhone first launched in 2007.  Maybe they saw it as being more of 'toy' rather than a serious business tool.  Not many IT managers would have signed up to the iPhone at this time as the BlackBerry was the instrument of choice at  multinationals worldwide.  How times have changed.  Even hard pressed Yahoo! is ditching the fruit...  http://is.gd/Quwc1k

Of course, BlackBerry cemented its reputation during the 9/11 tragedy.   They were one of the few communicator machines to work as the ability of the telecom companies to carry so much voice traffic in time of crisis was found wanting.  Some of the last messages sent from people in the Twin Towers were on BlackBerrys.  Just as minds of loved ones were also put at rest as people who survived sent their good news.    RIM really has some robust infrastructure technology and has Network Operating Centers around the world (which very occasionally become infamous when they fall over).

Today, anyone who sees young girls operate the communications within their ecosystems knows that the  BlackBerry messenger system features heavily.  BlackBerrys are cheap in comparison to other more glitzy smartphones and in case you don't know young girls like to 'chat', incessantly!

This together with infrastructure expertise and assets, and the fact that not everyone wants a zillion 'apps' on their communication device must mean that there is still a future for this iconic brand.  What's more is it not beyond the wit of the Digerati to put together a deal that keeps the USPs of RIM and combines them with an APPs universe?  Those of us who love our BlackBerrys must be frustrated that Google chose to take over Motorola's handset business rather then link up with RIM.  Samsumg-san?  Where are you?

The Chief Whip is An Aggressive Prat - Is this News?

Play the Ball.  This morning's Sun newspaper headlines:  "Cabinet minister: Police are plebs"   See here: http://tinyurl.com/buujlbb

Apparently the Cabinet Minister is the Conservative Party Parliamentary Chief Whip and he had an altercation with the Police at Downing Street – something to do with his bicycle. It is the type of story that the UK domestic media take up and run with for days on end and it bores the crap out of me.

In fact, this story is an example of why I only listen to the BBC World Service, watch CNN International,  Bloomberg and CNBC where the headlines are about international matters.  Admittedly I listen to the Today programme on Radio 4 for about 20 minutes in the morning too when I get up in order to get some sort of domestic angle.  But I don’t read the UK national newspapers that much for the same reasons.

Seriously, please answer me this? Don't these parochial stories and the incessant chatter about them drive you mad? I got a lift in a friend’s car today and was subjected to this story on BBC Radio 5 Live after the copper involved went to his 'Federation Rep' - the Policeman's Union. It turned out to be sixty minutes of a phone in with Numpties going on and on about class warfare...arrrrrrrgh.

OK the Chief Whip may have be an aggressive prat (Hello!?!  That's what Chief Whips are supposed to be – they 'whip' parliamentary backbenchers into line to vote for the Governing parties legislative programme though the Parliamentary Lobby).  Look’s like this Whip was stupid and likely stressed to the Nines (wouldn't you be if you were Chief Whip of the UK Conservative Party right now?).  For Heavens' sake he apologised straight away.  Yep that’s right, the politician said ‘sorry’.  Someone make a You Tube Video out of it and make him look silly!

BUT LET'S MOVE ON to the important global stuff that is affecting us all....
