Vice News - Gritty, Real, Frightening

OK, in a 5th round #BuzzFeed got $50M funding from Andreessen Horowitz on
Sunday. So, where does this leave Shane Smith's Vice Media? Vice recently raised
$70M from Murdoch's 21st Century #Fox, $50M of which is reportedly slated to
boost the company's already great news video channel. I posted last month about
the inane repetitive diatribe that #BBC, #CNN, #CNBC broadcast from
correspondents sitting in hotels. Vice get out on the streets and mix it with
both the good and the bad guys worldwide. Check out their blazingly good #ISIS
material posted last week here: https://news.vice.com/

I agree with your thoughts, Gary. That being said, I'd like to point something out regarding the VICE docs on #IS (no longer #ISIS). They should not be taken as credible. IS utilized VICE as propaganda in order to make the group appear less violent/extreme than it truly is.

In some respects all media reporting is propaganda Dan - it is not a science. What you choose to cover itself skews the pitch. As viewers we know that the Vice reporter is not going to be a i) a woman, ii) white and iii) a christian. We also know that they are hardly likely to speak out against ISIS or ask challenging questions. The fact that they are giving us a view from the Islamic state is extremely valuable. That is why VICE reports are very credible. If this is what ISIS wants us to believe that's fine as long as this is clear. The Jihadists want us to call them IS not ISIS and you seem to have swallowed that no problem! Check out the VICE's Shane Smith's visit to N. Korea. Awesome!

How is BBC reporting propaganda in a sense? Media reporting with opinion is propaganda, in a sense, but when all sides are covered in reporting, it is fact based. Regarding the name changes of IS, I suggest you read this quick article, http://news.intelwire.com/2014/08/whats-in-name.html?m=1. I do not call IS because I recognize it, but because it is correct to call a group by its current name for future reference.

Er, how can the BBC 'cover all sides' when they don't have anyone on the ground in the so-called Islamic State'? Western news agencies either report IS press/video releases or show unverified video from refugee cellphones. Hardly the 'fact based' reporting that you suggest. At least VICE News have a bloke on the ground with IS, in fact, and watching his accompanying 'press officer' join the battle with his chums on the frontline by blatting an AK47 down range, in fact, is a moving picture worth more than a thousand words!
